Jon P. Rubach, M.D.

Dr. Jon Rubach has practiced hematology/oncology in the East Valley for over thirty years. He is the founder of Desert Oncology. He is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine, hematology/oncology in Buffalo. His philosophy has always been to treat patients with care, concern, and commitment. Dr. Rubach believes that the physician must also be the patient’s advocate.

Harrison J. Bachrach, M.D.

Dr. Bachrach was born and raised in a farming community on eastern Long Island. He graduated with honors from the State University of New York Buffalo School of Medicine. Once completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, he went on to finish a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology (blood and cancer medicine) at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the State University of New York in Buffalo. He directly joined Desert Oncology in 1988, where he has remained in practice since.

He enjoys spending his spare time with his family, and has maintained a life-long interest and involvement in the performing and visual arts.

Dr. Bachrach is board-certified in both medical oncology and hematology, and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians, and the AMA. He has been selected as a Top Doc by the Phoenix Magazine survey.

Ahsan M. Basha, M.D.

Dr. Basha was born and raised in Chicago.  He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  After completing his residency in internal medicine at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, he served on the faculty of internal medicine there.  He went back to join the fellowship program for hematology and oncology at Rush University.  After completing the fellowship, he joined Desert Oncology in 2002.

Dr. Basha enjoys spending his free time with family, all of whom are avid fans of the Phoenix Suns.  Occasionally you may pass him on the way to the office as he rides his bicycle there.

Dr. Basha is board certified in medical oncology.  He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the AMA.

Jack R. Cavalcant, M.D.

Dr. Cavalcant began his practice at Desert Oncology in 1982 after completing an Oncology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and a Hematology fellowship at Montefiore Hospital at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh.  He earned his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Medicine and did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Nassau County Medical Center East Meadow, New York.

Dr. Cavalcant is board certified in Medical Oncology and Hematology.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.  Dr. Cavalcant has over 25 years experience in oncology and hematology and has been recognized by his peers numerous times as a Top Doc in Phoenix Magazine.

Marvin M. Chassin, M.D.

Dr. Marvin Chassin has practiced medical oncology with Desert Oncology since moving to Arizona in 1978. He graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and did an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals. He completed a Medical Oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was involved in clinical and drug development research. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has over thirty years experience treating breast cancer, lymphomas, colon and lung cancers, and has been recognized by his peers many times with Phoenix Magazine’s Top Doc award.

Michael M. Long, M.D.

Dr. Long was born in New York City. He earned his medical degree at the University of Brussels, Belgium and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the New York Infirmary/NYU Medical Center.  Dr. Long went on to complete his fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology at New York Medical College and is board certified.

Dr. Long has been practicing medicine in Arizona since 1989 and is currently the Medical Director for Banner Hospice.  He maintains an active practice working in all areas of hematology and oncology and has been named Top Doc by Phoenix Magazine.

Christopher M. Manus, M.D.

Christopher M. Manus M.D. joined Desert Oncology in the spring of 2008.  He was raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  He attended college at Vanderbilt University where he majored in Anthropology and Biology.  He earned his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia.  After completing his Internal Medicine internship and residency, he went on to complete a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Kansas University Hospital.

Dr. Manus is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.  He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.  He maintains an interest in all types of cancer as well as hematological disorders.

Sumeet Kumar Mendonca M.D.

Dr. Sumeet Kumar Mendonca joins Desert Oncology Associates in 2008 after having completed her training in Hematology/ Medical Oncology in Boston. Her initial educational studies were completed in India, Singapore and Nigeria, after which she attended Medical School at MGM Medical College, Mumbai, India. She then dedicated two years to research in the field of Cancer Immunotherapy at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Her work has resulted in a number of publications, as well as presentations.
She completed her training in Hematology/ Medical Oncology at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center, affiliated to TUFTS University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts.
She also completed her residency in Internal Medicine in the same institution and was the proud recipient of the Brian Trainor Memorial Award which is awarded to the resident for academic excellence as well as a deep commitment to the qualities of compassion, empathy and humility.
She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and treats all forms of adult cancers as well as benign blood disorders. She has been a prominent advocate for the promotion of women’s health and was actively involved at the Center of Breast Care throughout her training, focusing on prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Clayton R. Polowy, M.D.

Dr. Polowy joined Desert Oncology in 2004. He earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Polowy completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois and was named Senior Resident of the Year. He continued his training at Rush and completed his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology and also served as Chief Fellow.

In August of 2003, Dr. Polowy presented his research at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer meeting in Vancouver, B.C. After joining Desert Oncology, in just his second year at Banner Desert Medical Center, he was nominated Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine in 2005. He maintains an active practice treating all types of adult cancer and benign blood disorders.

Dr. Polowy also continues to work closely with physicians at the Desert Endovascular Center in the treatment of blood clotting syndromes. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
